Brass, Coin, & Blood Designs

Over the winter between school semesters I wanted to hunker down and work on my painting, character, creature, & prop design skills since I managed to get a grasp on the basics during the fall semester. I used characters from my Dungeons & Dragons campaign, "Brass, Coin, & Blood" as my starting point for the world & designs. It's set in a fictional country called "Remington's Prospect", which is a fantasy western/Cattlepunk, with a slight tinge of mad max, plenty of undead, and of course the classic samurai cowboy trope.

Luther is a main NPC in the setting. He's a sly merc, who works for the big bad villain, who provides Luther with top-not equipment. On the downside, Luther's wanted for desertion in his home country, and his commanding officer's come to collect.

Luther's first outfit is his more "cowboyish" one, which he wore regularly around Remington's Prospect until he decided he needed armor, which is the 2nd design. His last outfit is what he wore in in his home country as a ninja.

Animus Bastille is Luther's special revolver, which has been enchanted to serve the purposes of the big bad villain. Supposedly, it teleports whatever's shot at, preparing it for a necromantic ritual...

A rough example of what Animus Bastille looks like when firing. Also I really wanted to provide a visual for my D&D party so they understood just how cool this gun was. (And then they stole it from Luther.)

Luther's development sheet. He was originally designed for one of my classes in spring of 2020, but never got a proper orthographic view. He also has another item called the "Coin of Serendipity".

Sugimoto Hirano was Luther's commanding officer when Luther served in his home country's "military". Let's just say it was actually a ninja clan of elite assassins looking to seize control of the country. Anyway, Sugimoto is here to take care of Luther.

Sugimoto's poncho was really fun to design. The entire thought was "How cool would it be...if his poncho was a weapon too, and it could cut you?" and I just went with it. "How does he not cut himself?" Well...have you seen his eyepatch?

Sugimoto was a tough character to design for me. Partially because orc jaws are weird, and partially because I didn't know what I wanted under the poncho. So, I drew him a LOT during lectures to get a handle on his design.

Irma is the leader of the drow city, Shady Mesa. This particular design is an overhaul of her monster form.

Irma's design was really fun to come up with, since I don't normally design overly sexy ladies. Plus, I knew I had some characters I wanted to draw from for her, and one of my friends who actively plays league recommended I look at Elise.
